Got my shiny new DVD of Sherlock Series 2 which was just released 23rd January :D:D:D.

Letting you guys know what's included on the DVDs :).

It's a region 2 and 4 DVD so if you're purchasing the DVD overseas make sure it's actually playable on your DVD player ;).

Disc 1 contains:
A Scandal in Belgravia, including audio commentary by Sue Vertue, Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat, Benedict Cumberbatch and Lara Pulver.
The Hounds of Baskerville, including audio commentary by Russell Tovey, Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue.

Disc 2 contains:
The Reichenbach Fall (no commentaries this time I'm afraid).
Extra - Sherlock Uncovered.(a 30mins behind-the-scenes with cast and crew).

Time to enjoy the deliciousness once more! :)

Now for some interesting tidbits I picked up from the commentaries. Warning: Potential episode spoilers ;).

From the "A Scandal in Belgravia" commentary:

- The idea for the infamous "Stayin Alive" ringtone at the pool scene actually came from Sue Vertue, who was inspired when a phone went off inappropriately at a funeral she attended ;).

- They filmed the continuation of the pool scene in August so it was really hot wearing the suits and all when filming LOL.

- Geek Interpreter and Speckled Blonde are nods to Greek Interpreter and Speckled Band respectively :P.

- Benedict joked that he regrets having Sherlock eat something (when John is typing up the Speckled Blonde case) as he would have liked to maintain the illusion of Sherlock never eating anything XD.

- Mark and Steven giggled like schoolgirls when deerstalker!Sherlock made its debut.

- The part where Irene is caressing the newspaper pic of Sherlock, Lara said the immaculate red nails took hours to do :P.

- Sheet!Lock scene is Lara's fav bit of the episode. It's mine as well :).

- When filming the sheet!Lock scene where Mycroft steps on the sheet, Benedict fell over and went whoomph on the carpet. The crew all laughed at this. ROFL! They said they were thinking of including this in the bloopers reel...SO WHY IS THERE NO BLOOPER REEL ON THIS DVD?!!! I DEMAND THIS OUTTAKE NOW! :P

- The white dress Irene wears is by Alexander McQueen.

- Benedict loved doing the slow-mo fight scene with the CIA agents and would be proud to show it to his grandchildren XD. Apparently the camera used to film it can only record 17secs of footage before it needs to wind down and recharge HEH.

- The Irene drugging Sherlock scene was an idea re-used from the pilot. Mark and Steven sure do enjoy some Sherlock whumpage XD.

- The actors were attacked by lots of midges when they were filming out in the beautiful field where the boomerang incident took place.

- The part which transitions from the field to the bed, they used a hydraulic bed that can be raised upright. All of the crew nearby cheered and were very impressed with this.

- The japanese framed writing in Sherlock's bedroom is a nod to the Baritsu technique. a form of mixed martial art which Sherlock used in The Final Problem when facing Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls.

- The "Refit for Historic Hospital" which was conspiciously shown on the newspaper Sherlock was reading was originally supposed to have played into the third episode but they didn't use this plot-device in the end. Scaffolding work was supposed to have been done on Barts Hospital...hmmmn there's another possible clue for Sherlock surviving the fall ;).

- Benedict can play 3 or 4 tunes from memory on the violin. Awww bless :D.

- Mark loved the comedic timing from Rupert Graves after Molly asks Lestrade about his wife and Sherlock is a total asshole and tells him his wife is cheating on him.

- Lara had to record several versions of the orgasmic sigh ringtone. Mark said one of them sounded like she was constipated HAHAHA XD.

- Benedict said they had to do several takes of the smoking scene. He enjoyed the first cigarette, but after a few takes started feeling rather ill. He said "Don't smoke kids, it messes you up" XD.

- The part where we see the profiles of Mycroft and Sherlock outside the morgue, Mark and Steven said they would make wonderful stamps. I concur! :)

- Mark squees over the "man-love" or "m-ove" between John and Sherlock when John is angry at Irene faking her death and not telling Sherlock she's alive.

- The commentators are all impressed at Benedict's amazing acting abilities when he makes his I'm-gonna-cut-a-bitch face when he realises the CIA agents have kidnapped and hurt Mrs Hudson.

- Sue has received a ridiculous amount of emails about Sherlock's coat and wonders why Belstaff don't make such a popular coat anymore.

- Lara does a lovely squeaky impression of "right on my bins" ;).

- The commentators all fancy Rupert <3. Observe:
  • Mark Gatiss: He's so dishy
  • Lara Pulver: He is, isn't he?
  • Benedict Cumberbatch: (dreamily) Yeah, he is.
  • Steven Moffat: Yeaaah.
  • Benedict: We all fancy you, Rupert.

- It was Benedict's idea to have Sherlock raid Mrs Hudson's fridge for a mince pie, just to show how much of a motherly figure she is to him :D.

- Benedict said memorising the plane deduction part was certainly a mouthful and was glad Martin and Lara were so patient with him until he got it right :).

- Mark and Steven describe this scene as intellectual flirting between Sherlock and Irene.

- They shot the plane scene around 4am so they had some extras falling asleep and snoring, meaning they had to do takes until they made sure everyone was awake LOL!

- One of the original ideas was to have Mycroft sit on one of the plane seats and switch on his overhead light when Sherlock arrived just to make his point, but they scraped this idea as they thought it was too silly to have Mycroft waiting there for hours until Sherlock came XD.

- Steven was worried that people would guess the "Sherlocked" code easily but was glad it came as such a surprise and was a that-was-actually-so-obvious moment.

- The part where Mycroft and John meet outside Speedy's was shot when the riots were happening in August 2011. They said the crew and cast fled when the police came and said they had to leave for their safety. Those were dark days last year :(.

- Mark said it would have been wonderful to have Mycroft flashback to when Sherlock wanted to be a pirate...WHY DID YOU GUYS NOT INCLUDE THIS IN THE EPISODE THEN?!!! XD

- Sue jokes that perhaps Sherlock wanted to keep the phone since it was so expensive :P.

- Mark calls Benedict "Lawrence of Cumberbatch" when he's wearing the Middle-Eastern clothes. WIN! :D

From the "The Hounds of Baskerville" commentary:
- Russell said his nephew has sticky-out ears like him (HEH!) so he came in and auditioned for the part of mini-Henry but unfortunately he was too young and the part went to someone else.

- The harpoon scene is a nod to The Adventure of Black Peter. In that story, Sherlock was INDEED out all morning harpooning pigs and getting blood all over himself XD. He was investigating the murder of a sea captain who was impaled and pinned to the wall of his cabin with a harpoon.

- Mark and Steven said they have read ALL the Sherlock Holmes books. Good going you fanboys :P.

- The cigarette Henry smoked was a fake as it is illegal to smoke on the 221B Baker Street set. Instead they used some sort of honey roast thing LOL.

- Since Mark rides on trains a lot, the Sherlock deduces Henry's antics on the train scene was inspired by a person sat opposite him spilling their coffee and mopping it up.

- Russell gushed about the 221B Baker Street set and said there were lots of stuff he wanted to take home ;).

- Mark jokes the script took 2000 years to complete XD.

- The story Fletcher tells about the Ministry of Defence man who saw the weird and wonderful stuff is actually based on a true story...LOL if you say so ;).

- One of the monkeys they used for filming during the lab scenes was very good at masturbation. Ok too much information there guys :P.

- Yup, that was Mycroft in the Diogenes club! :D

- Major Barrymore's beard was stuck on, as apparently you can't have a beard in the army (but you can in the navy). Since Baskerville is a quasi-military complex anyway, Mark decided to stick a beard on Barrymore as a nod to the bearded character in the original story.

- The Sherlock putting his collar up and cheekbones! gag was originally supposed to go at a different point in the episode but they thought it worked here as well.

- Each episode takes around 4 weeks to shoot.

- Mark and Steven were debating on whether to have Sherlock drive or not. The clincher was Martin being unable to drive, so they decided to let Sherlock do the driving! :)

- The "Are you rich?" line spoken by John is a nod to Jaws the movie.

- Russell said he was trying to play Henry not as a gibbering wreck but as a man who was mature but damaged by his experiences.

- Mark had great fun putting his cheeky twist on the morse code part from the original story ;).

- After the U.M.Q.R.A. scene was filmed, this happened to poor Sue :P:

  • Sue Vertue: We got back at five o'clock in the morning or something, to the hotel and -
  • Steven Moffat: Couldn't get in.
  • Sue Vertue: Couldn't get in.
  • Steven Moffat: Some utter fool -
  • Sue Vertue: Which turned out to be Benedict.
  • Steven Moffat: Yes, that's where I was going with that! He had accidently locked you out of the Bed and Breakfast.
  • Russell Tovey: What? I was sitting up with him that night drinking!

- "Dewers Hollow" is a natural rock formation and was a nightmare for the lighting people to access.

- Mark calls Sherlock's coat the "Hero coat" <3.

- The original plan was to make 6 x 60mins episodes per series, but they eventually went with 3 x 90mins for much more meaty episodes :).

- Mark worked closely together with Russell during the security lights scares Henry scene to make sure he got the reactions he wanted :P.

- Graveyard scene was shot in Wales, not Dartmoor, on the first day of filming.

- Lestrade's brown-as-a-nut look was because Rupert had just come back from filming Death in Paradise and was looking particularly tanned. As it was hard to ignore, it was written into the script XD.

- Mark and Steven joke that Lestrade should have his own spin-off series where he goes off on his own without Sherlock and unsuccessfully solves crimes. YES YES YES WANT THIS! :D

- Mark said that the two gay pub owners wasn't a gay agenda (HAHA XD) and they were written in as he thought it was a much more modern sounding scenario rather than the original idea of having an elderly lady own the place.

- The commentators REALLY like that conservatory XD.

- Mark said the glow in the dark rabbit is based on a real life experiment. I do some squeeing here because I have worked with GFP myself :D.

- Mark and Steven agree the Mind Palace of Awesomeness should definitely be revisited in later episodes :).

- H.O.U.N.D. = Hydrogen, oxygen, urine...ROFL XD.

- The H.O.U.N.D. T-Shirt was a Spinal Tap inspired gag.

-  Wishbone gets a mention haha! In that TV series Irene Adler was a dog, so the commentators giggle over the fact that "to Sherlock Holmes she was always a bitch" XDXDXD.

- It rained so hard they couldn't film in Dewers Hollow some days.

- The dog that John shot was filmed in a studio on some leaves they gathered. They said it was a gorgeous show-dog.

- Originally the ending of Baskerville was supposed to be Moriarty going into the Tower of London but they felt the timing of it wasn't right so left it for the next episode.

- Nooooo, they were gonna get Andrew Scott to do a commentary for The Reichenbach Fall but he was unavailable :'(.

- LOL Andrew sounds like a really mischevious kinda guy. Sue said when someone tripped over, Andrew joked "I did that" :P. Mark also commented that just before filming Reichenbach, Andrew sent him a picture of himself standing outside Tower Bridge going MUAHAHAHA XD.

Hahah this was fantastic. My favorite bit was about how Moriarty's ring tone came to be. I'm American, so um...what are midges? Are they like gnats?

I can't wait for the DVD to come out here in the states.

I so wish they'd done commentary for the third episode :(

take care xx
Jan. 24th, 2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
Yup gnats = midges. Been bitten by them before and their bites feel itchier than a mosquitos'. Evil midges :P.

Really kind of you to post this for those of us who can't get it. Though I am totally bummed that there are no commentaries for TRF. Guys, really? Come on, us fangirls need it! :p Thanks again!

You're welcome :). I wish they had included the blooper scene with sheet!Lock. It sounds hilarious XD.
Jan. 24th, 2012 08:45 pm (UTC)
That's awesome. I have a region free player and have ordered them but they won't be here until next week. Very glad to have the spoilers.

Enjoy your DVD when you get it! :)

Can you tell what episode the "Behind the Scenes" stuff is set during? Like, what stuff do we see?
Jan. 25th, 2012 01:55 am (UTC)
It covers all 3 eps but focuses mostly on scenes shot in ASIB. My fav part involves a hydraulic bed being raised upright i.e. basically "upstaging" benedict XD.

Haha thanks! :)

I had to pause and rewind the commentaries several times while making my notes as I kept getting distracted by Benedict's gorgeous eyes and my mind wondered off to a place of sunshine and rainbows XD.
